Being available isn’t the same as being discovered.
I recently looked at a list of 39 different apps where someone could listen to the same podcast. Thirty-nine doors into the same room. And I thought about how much time we spend in this business building doors, assuming that’s what gets people to walk through them.
Actors know this feeling. The reel is up. The profiles are current. The headshots are new. Everything is available. Then comes the question: Why isn’t anything happening?
It’s a fair question. Getting all of that together takes work. And when you’ve done everything you were told to do, you expect something to move.
But there’s a gap between making yourself available and giving someone a reason to stop.
I think about that gap a lot as a manager.
We can submit an actor for a role. We can send a link. We can make sure the right person has the materials. Those are necessary steps. But the most useful part of the job often comes down to answering one question: Why should this person pay attention to this actor right now?
“You should know my client” asks someone else to figure out the connection.
“I read this role and immediately thought of my client because…” starts making the connection for them.
That difference matters when the person receiving the email has a hundred other things competing for their attention.
And that brings me back to the podcast.
Here they are, all 39. If you want to listen, take your pick. If you’re still deciding whether to listen, notice how little the number of options helps you make that decision.
If you scrolled past most of those, you’ve helped me make my point.
Every link serves a purpose. Someone who uses a particular app can get where they want to go. Making that easy is worthwhile.
But the list can’t tell you why the conversation deserves an hour of your life. A compelling idea might. A clip that stays with you might. A recommendation from someone whose taste you trust might.
The same thing happens with actors.
A casting director may already have access to your work. What they may need is a reason to see you differently. Perhaps the part calls for a quality your best-known role never let you show. Perhaps a recent performance reveals something that wasn’t there two years ago. Perhaps the most persuasive thing your representative can send is one scene, with a sentence explaining why it matters.
I have something I call the chill factor: that sudden rise of emotion that’s often the soul’s way of saying, pay attention. It can be a sentence in a novel, a look exchanged across the room, a sudden memory that arrives without warning. These aren’t coincidences. They’re clues.
What moves you, reveals you.
Now think about a casting director. How many times can they get that feeling in one day? Not many. They can watch tape after tape from breakfast to dinner, and most of it is fine. Competent. Available. Then one actor does something with the same four lines that nobody else thought to do, and suddenly they’re not reaching for the next tape. That’s the chill. Nobody can manufacture it, and a link can’t deliver it on its own. But when I feel it watching a client, my job is to make damn sure the right person feels it too. Send that one scene. Say, “Watch what she does at 1:12.” That’s the reason to stop.
That takes attention. It requires knowing the actor, understanding the material, and respecting the person you’re approaching.
Of course, a thoughtful pitch can still go unanswered. The role may already be offered. The production may change direction. Someone else may simply be the better fit. Nobody can make this business predictable by writing a better email.
But we can be more deliberate about the work we control.
Before I send another pitch, I try to ask myself what I want the other person to feel. Before I suggest adding another scene to a reel, I ask what it shows that the others don’t. Before I reach out to everyone I know on a client’s behalf, I think about who has a real reason to respond.
I need that reminder myself. Sending something feels productive. You get to cross it off the list. Taking the time to figure out what will make it meaningful is harder to measure.
Actors already spend enough time wondering whether they’re doing enough. I’m not interested in handing them another checklist. Sometimes the next useful step is a conversation with your representatives: What are we asking people to see in me, and are we showing them the work that supports it?
That’s a question worth spending time on.
Thirty-nine ways to listen is convenient.
A reason to listen is what gets someone to press play.
The chill is what makes them remember it.
And you can’t give anyone the chill if you won’t let yourself feel it.
Let yourself be moved.
